So last week I went to the Thai Airways office in Bangkok to change my wife’s flight, and whilst I was there I was chatting to the girl behind the counter and I asked out of curiosity, just how many airmiles I had built up. After checking in the system she told me that I was actually quite close to gaining Gold card status, but that was only after I added my latest airmiles that were missing from using Star Alliance partners on my latest 3 flights.
She then went on to tell me that I also had a few thousand airmiles expiring on 30th September this year, which was not good in my eyes.
I am already booked up for all my flights through until March 2018, so not only did I have no reason to book a flight I actually had no time to take any extra flights between now and end of September.
I proceeded to ask what else I could exchange the said expiring airmiles for and that’s when she pulled up a deal they currently had on for FREE nights stay at any of the Dusit Thani Hotels in Thailand.
The expiring miles I had would not get me a flight or upgrade but they were enough to get me 2 nights stay at the Dusit Thani in Hua Hin (2 hours drive from my home in Bangkok) for myself, my wife and my daughter with breakfast included.
So an unplanned impromptu weekend getaway for 3 days and 2 nights was booked and we have just got back after a great relaxing weekend by the pool/beach sipping cocktails.
It was not something in my mind to do, or that I had even thought about, but the current rate for the room we were offered is over $300+ per night. For that reason alone I felt we had to have a few days break.
What got me thinking whilst I was there was, I wondered how many people in the world miss out on amazing experiences like that, just because they never ask a question?
I bet 100’s if not 1,000’s of people have let airmiles expire thinking they could not use them, but if they had only asked the company what they could use them for before they expire they may have been as lucky as us and got an amazing break away for a day or a weekend, all completely FREE.
Here are a few photo’s I took on our weekend break away.
